Yeah, that Yule Cat was... something. Like a weird cross between Krampus and Santa Claus. I did put on a sweater, though, so I was OK. But still, it was all very unsettling. At least it was one of the milder things to happen here.

Yeah, it would be best to not meet during the fog. Probably not too close to mid-month, though, since that's usually when bad things happen.

Probably sounds weird to say, but looking back on it, the Yule Cat was milder than some of the things that happened back in my own world too. Unsettling, sure, but it could've been worse.

So sometime between the 9th and the 14th? We could meet for coffee somewhere.

The Yule Cat was milder than what happened in your own world? I'm not sure I want to know... But then again, an angry supernatural cat is probably tamer than things like murder and other crimes.

That definitely works! It would be good to start over, I think. Speaking of cats, I think there's a Kit T Kat café or something along those lines?

Sure, there's murder and other crimes too, but things get wilder than that. All long stories, though. I can tell you about it in person, if you want.

[He'll be there! Early, even, because he wasn't sure how long the trek between the college and the café would take, so he played it safe. It gave him time to secure a table and try to lure one of the cats over.

Last time they met, Steven had been decked out in full Mr. Knight attire, but he should still be easy enough for Phoenix to recognize without it. His wings, halo and tail are pretty distinct.]

[Phoenix, though, is kind of nervous, seeing as the last time he saw Steven in person was during that haze incident. It's just not a thing he wants to remember. But maybe this will help put the whole thing behind him.

Nonetheless, he is later than Steven... He's later than the arranged time by like seven minutes, actually. But he rushes in, instantly recognizing the nephilim.]

Hi! Steven, right? I don't think I've seen you without your mask...

[Steven really doesn't mind the other man being late. He got one of the cats to settle down atop the table, and has been petting it gently. Ancient Egyptians had the right idea to revere these cuties.

Still, when Phoenix enters, he rises to his feet.]

Hey! Yeah, that's me. Seems like a shame to keep hiding all this, right? [He gestures towards his face with an awkward little laugh. (How does one joke around and is he doing it correctly right now?)]

[There is actually somewhat of a relief to see Steven gently petting a cute little kitty. Maybe in another context it might look like a stereotypical evil villain, but right now it's pretty cute.]

Ha-ha... Yeah. [Yeah, that's an awkward joke, but he'll swing with it.]

Why do you wear that mask anyway? [He cracks a smile to indicate he's not fully serious.]

[Awkward jokes for awkward men! He's just glad that Phoenix is rolling with it instead of letting it drop between them.]

It completes the outfit, don't it? [Ha haa... He gestures to the chair across the table, and the cat's eyes follow the movement attentively.] Here, have a seat.

I... guess! [He'll just go along with it. The last guy he knew who wore a mask was a vigilante robber, but he's assuming Steven is probably better than that. After all, despite Phoenix having been corrupted by the haze, he does remember Steven rescuing him from a horde of haze-affected people.

But Phoenix smiles as he takes a seat, and actually breathes a sigh of relief.]

Well it's good to finally meet you on a relaxed day at a coffee shop.

[A beat.] ...Knock on wood.

[Steven sits back down when Phoenix does, careful about moving his chair closer to the table so there's no scraping noise to alarm the cat. ...Only to undermine himself immediately.]

Oh- yeah! Knock on wood for sure!

[He raps his knuckles on the table and the cat shifts, a little agitated. Oops. Steven quickly pets it on the head to pacify it again.]

[Phoenix smiles at the cat, reaching over to join petting it.]

What a cute cat! A cat cafe seems like the perfect getaway...

[As soon as Phoenix reaches out to pet, Steven withdraws his own hand. Cat's all yours, Phoenix!]

It is, innit? We had these things back home too, but I've never been to one. Would've felt a little sad going there all by myself, I reckon. [Because that's not an awkward thing to say.]

Yeah, we had them too.

[Phoenix pets the cat, and the cat seems to move closer into Phoenix's arms. Oh... He's not entirely used to this, but it is cute.]

This is my first time at one too... [Yeah, Steven's statement is awkward, but Phoenix is also awkward so it works. He just laughs slightly.] Well it's good we can both go to one with a friend now!

[He chuckles, sitting back in his chair.]

Yeah, it is. This world's absolutely horrid, but... There's loads of little things like this that make it tolerable, you know? There's some folks out there who prefer this place over their own homes, and sometimes I get that.

[Phoenix's smile fades just a bit. It's a tough subject since he wishes more than anything to return home. His eyes shift away from Steven and toward the cat as he continues petting it.]

Yeah... I guess that's one good thing about this place. It's given me an excuse to visit a cat cafe.

But... I can understand if someone has come from a truly horrible place... This might be better.

Yeah... Yeah, it is.

[Steven knows a couple people who've died back home, or who are about to go through something terrible, so he understands why they'd want to stay here too. But that's kind of a downer turn for the conversation to take, so he'll try and turn it right back around again.]

How long have you been here already?

[It is definitely a downer, but unfortunately it is how a lot of conversations here go.

And it's even more of a downer when Phoenix thinks about how long he's been here.]

I... Hm. I think it's been about two years? Maybe a little more...

[He came just at the Nattensfest season, he recalls. Despite the fact that it was March back at home and Christmas had very recently happened.]

What about you?

[Steven is low-key impressed by the two years in a positive way. After seeing friends leave this place after only really having known them for two months, and after Marc only having been here for two weeks, he kinda selfishly wants everyone else he knows to stay here for those years. If not longer.

Needless to say, an awed little "ooh" escapes him at the estimate.]

Nothing that long. Since last June, so that's... seven months? I mean, it is a pretty long time to be a cannibal monster, but compared to two years? Not that long.

Yeah, I guess I've... kind of gotten used to it.

[He has somewhat of a sad smile. Weary. It's not something he ever wanted to be used to, but... the human mind will always adjust.

He stirs some sugar into his tea idly.]

I guess any amount of time having to be here is pretty long in that sense. Several months... You've fully changed and all by now, haven't you?
